Ida Rentoul Outhwaite (1888–1960) is regarded as Australia’s greatest fairy illustrator and one of the country’s most important Golden Age artists. Born in Melbourne, she achieved national recognition while still a teenager and went on to illustrate many of Australia’s most beloved children’s books, including Elves and Fairies, The Enchanted Forest, and The Little Green Road to Fairyland. Her exquisitely detailed illustrations combined European fairy traditions with uniquely Australian landscapes and native flora, creating an unmistakable visual language that has enchanted collectors for more than a century. Outhwaite exhibited internationally in London and Paris, and her original artworks are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the State Library of Victoria, and numerous major public institutions. Today, her early first-edition prints remain among the most desirable works in Australian illustration.
