1983 Facsimile Print after Brett Whiteley, The Back of the Asylum, St Rémy, framed art

$395.00

A vintage facsimile proof print after Brett Whiteley’s The Back of the Asylum, St Rémy, presenting an energetic, highly linear view of the landscape surrounding Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the town closely associated with Vincent van Gogh. The composition is characteristically Whiteley in its combination of spontaneity, expressive distortion and densely worked line.

High quality 1983 facsimile process print created as part of his suite "Another Way of Looking at Vincent Van Gogh." This particular reproduction was likely produced as a proof print for a book associated with the exhibition at the time. A rarely offered copy from the era, framed with gilt solid wood and double mount behind glass.

Artist biography: Brett Whiteley (1939–1992) was one of Australia’s most celebrated and recognisable twentieth-century artists. Whiteley was deeply influenced by artists including Vincent van Gogh, whose life and work became an important recurring reference within his own practice. Whiteley achieved the remarkable distinction of winning the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes in the same year, 1978, and his work is now represented throughout Australia’s major public collections. His former Sydney home and studio is preserved as the Brett Whiteley Studio, administered by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
