Born in Armidale, New South Wales, she studied under Julian Ashton before moving to London in 1903, where she became known as a lithographer and designer and moved within a circle that included George Lambert and other leading Australian expatriate artists. Returning permanently to Australia in 1921, Proctor became a prominent advocate for modern art and design, taught at Julian Ashton’s Sydney Art School and helped introduce younger Australian artists to linocut and woodcut techniques.
