About the Artist

Ida Rentoul Outhwaite (1888–1960) was a celebrated Australian illustrator, born in Melbourne and renowned for her enchanting depictions of fairies, woodland creatures and magical landscapes. Considered a pioneer of Australian fantasy illustration, she combined the romantic traditions of European fairy tales with the distinctive flora and fauna of the Australian bush. Working closely with her sister, writer Annie Rattray Rentoul, she illustrated numerous beloved children’s books, including Elves and Fairies (1916), The Little Green Road to Fairyland (1922) and Fairyland (1926). Her exquisite illustrations gained international recognition, with successful exhibitions in London and Paris, and remain highly collectible examples of early twentieth-century Australian illustration.
