About the Artist

Tamami Shima (1937–1999) was a Japanese printmaker born in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, who graduated from Tokyo Women’s College of Fine Arts in 1958. Associated with the Sōsaku Hanga (creative print) movement, she became recognised for her distinctive woodblock prints featuring birds, horses and natural landscapes. Her work gained international recognition when Bird B was selected for James Michener’s influential 1962 publication The Modern Japanese Print: An Appreciation. Her prints are represented in major international museum collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
