Chromoxylography is the art of color woodblock printing, a technique that flourished in the mid-to-late 19th century and early 20th century. It involves carving images into wooden blocks, with separate blocks carved for each color, and then printing them layer by layer to create a final, multi-colored image. This process was used for illustrations, children's books, and other printed materials.
Maggie Salcedo (1890-1959) was a French artist and illustrator. Maggie studied graphic arts at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière . Her first published illustrations were for Pomme et Poire , a children's book written by Christophe. She then signed herself "Maggie". She worked with the architect Benjamin Gomez decorating the sumptuous villas he designed, composing wall panels and screens with motifs taken from Basque folklore and daily life. They participated together in the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in 1925. Salcedo was also a sought after illustrator for children's books as well as graphic designer of art posters for the Louvre in Paris.
