“Lawson Balfour (1870-1966) was a Melbourne-born portrait painter trained in England and Paris, where he studied at the Académie Julian under Bouguereau, Constant, and LeFebvre. After early work in Ireland and New Zealand, he settled in Sydney in 1912 and became known for formal portraits of prominent figures, including governors and fellow artists. His work blended academic technique with tonal realism and occasional expressive colour. Balfour was a fellow of the Royal Art Society of NSW and served on the committee of Manly Art Gallery. His work is held in major public collections in Australia and abroad.”
