$1,200.00

An original 1964 monotype and mixed-media work on paper by important Australian modernist printmaker Grahame King, signed and dated lower right. Combining black ink and transfer drawing with watercolour; a striking mid-century abstract composition in muted ochre, blue and black. The work is presented under glass with a broad mount in a restrained timber frame. Labels verso identify the work as Untitled, 1964. As a monotype, the printed component is inherently unique rather than an impression from a numbered edition.

Artist biography: Grahame King (1915–2008) was a Melbourne-born painter, printmaker, designer and influential teacher who became one of the leading figures in the development of Australian fine-art printmaking. After studying in Melbourne, King travelled to Britain in 1947 and worked at the Abbey Art Centre, where exposure to European and American modernism helped move his practice increasingly towards abstraction. By the beginning of the 1960s he had abandoned figuration, and by the middle of that decade was established as one of Australia’s significant printmakers.  He was awarded the Order of Australia in 1991 for services to education, and his work is represented in major institutional collections, including the National Gallery of Australia.  The NGA’s Australian Prints + Printmaking database records more than 200 works by King.
