Dale Marsh (born 1940), The Approaching Storm, 1974, original oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, with an earlier artist/dealer label to the reverse identifying the title, medium and location as Ampitheatre, Victoria, presented in a substantial gilt timber frame. The painting is a restrained and atmospheric rural study, using a subdued storm-grey palette and loose, economical brushwork to isolate the horse and figure against an expansive landscape, with the vivid red shirt providing the composition’s principal note of colour.

Artist biography: Dale Marsh is an Australian painter born in Brisbane in 1940, best known for oil paintings depicting the Australian landscape, rural life and its people. He began formal art training at a remarkably young age, receiving a scholarship to the Queensland Art Gallery where he was taught by noted Queensland artist Vida Lahey, before continuing his studies at Brisbane Technical College and later at RMIT in Melbourne. Marsh’s work reflects the influence of Australian landscape traditions, particularly Walter Withers, while his association with Ian Fairweather on Bribie Island also became an important part of his artistic development. He held his first Melbourne exhibition in 1972 and went on to stage more than fifty solo exhibitions in Australia, Japan and the United Kingdom. His work is represented in public and private collections including the Australian War Memorial and Queensland collections.
