“William Jardine (1800–1874) was a Scottish naturalist who edited the influential 40-volume Naturalist's Library (1833–1843), a natural history series featuring hand-colored, engraved plates. These intricate engravings, commissioned by Jardine and published by W. H. Lizars, were a significant development in scientific illustration, made possible by Lizars' use of steel instead of copper plates, which allowed for finer detail and greater artistic accuracy in the small illustrations.”
