Maggie Salcedo (1890–1959), Fairies and Flowers, 1911 — an original period colour hand pressed Chromoxylograph on paper created for Frances Ward’s Fairies and Flowers, published by William Heinemann, London, and signed “Maggie” within the image, presented under glass with a wide neutral mount and gilt timber frame.

A wonderfully lyrical Edwardian image, with Salcedo’s delicate linework, restrained autumnal palette and windblown figure capturing the playful innocence and gentle movement characteristic of early twentieth-century children’s illustration.

Artist biography: Maggie Salcedo (1890–1959), born Marguerite Séligmann-Lui, was a French painter, draughtswoman and illustrator whose career encompassed children’s books, fashion publishing, posters and commercial design. The Bibliothèque nationale de France records her work for influential publications including Gazette du Bon Ton and La Semaine de Suzette, as well as her extensive work in book illustration and advertising. She studied graphic arts at Paris’s Académie de la Grande Chaumière and was publishing illustrations from a young age, with Les Malices de Pomme et Poire appearing in 1907. In 1911 she illustrated Frances Ward’s Fairies and Flowers for William Heinemann, an edition containing thirteen full-page colour compositions; her later work extended through Art Deco-era publishing, poster design and painting.
