Artist biography: Albert Namatjira (1902–1959) was a Western Arrarnta artist from Ntaria/Hermannsburg in Central Australia and one of the most significant figures in Australian art. After developing his watercolour technique during the 1930s, notably through his association with landscape painter Rex Battarbee, Namatjira achieved extraordinary public recognition; his first solo exhibition in 1938 sold out. His luminous depictions of Western Arrarnta Country combined the conventions of European watercolour landscape painting with an intimate knowledge of ancestral Country, establishing what became known as the Hermannsburg School and influencing generations of artists from his family and community. His work is now understood not simply within the Western landscape tradition, but as a distinctly Western Arrarnta representation of Country and cultural connection.
