About the Artist
Margaret Preston (1875–1963) was one of Australia’s most influential modernist artists, celebrated for her vibrant still-life paintings, floral compositions and pioneering printmaking. Born in South Australia, Preston studied in Melbourne and Europe, where she developed a strong appreciation for Post-Impressionism and Japanese art. Returning to Australia, she became a leading advocate for a distinctly Australian artistic identity, incorporating native flora, striking colour and bold decorative forms into her work.
