1972 Extra Large original oil painting, Pham Luc, vintage framed artwork

$10,500.00

Large-scale, striking early oil on burlap by significant Vietnamese modernist artist Phạm Lực, often referred to as “The Picasso of Vietnam”. A particularly powerful and emotive composition, dated 1972 during the artist’s military service years, capturing the raw human emotions, compassion, resilience and shared experiences of wartime Vietnam. Multiple stylised figures are tightly compressed into a shallow pictorial space, their expressive faces and intertwined forms creating a sense of urgency and human connection. Heavy black contours, distorted perspectives and vigorously applied colour in rich earthy tones, punctuated by vibrant reds, greens and blues, lend the composition an almost expressionistic intensity characteristic of Lực’s celebrated wartime paintings.

Presented in an impressive white-painted timber shadow-box style gallery frame, with a generous recessed mount and protective glazing.

Artist Biography

Phạm Lực (born 1943 in Huế, Vietnam) is an important Vietnamese modern and contemporary painter whose career is closely intertwined with the country’s wartime and post-war history. A former military artist, Lực developed his distinctive expressive style while serving during the Vietnam War, frequently painting on unconventional materials including military rice sacks and burlap due to the scarcity of traditional art supplies. Often described as “The Picasso of Vietnam”, he has earned international recognition, attracting prominent admirers including former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who visited his Hanoi studio. Supported by a dedicated international collector base, his work explores themes of war, family, motherhood, everyday Vietnamese life and the emotional consequences of conflict. His paintings are characterised by bold drawing, simplified forms, flattened perspectives and expressive colour, with examples held in the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum and numerous international private collections.
