“Thomas Jaques Somerscales (British) was born in Kingston-upon-Hull, the son of a Hull ship master. He joined the Royal Navy as a naval schoolmaster aboard the training ship Cumberland. Over the next five years, he served in the same capacity on four other Royal Navy ships, but while visiting Panama, he caught malaria, and was later put ashore at Valparaiso in Chile. Due to the severity of his illness, he was discharged from the Royal Navy. As a child, he had always sketched, and, in his spare time in Chile, he painted a number of landscapes of the surrounding countryside. He exhibited three landscapes at the International Exposition in Santiago, winning a silver medal for his efforts, and, two years later, showed a view of Valparaiso at a similar exhibition in the Chilean capital.”
